Why - Rubber Traits

I've been in touch with Why?'s work for some time now. Ever since the Anticon bunch with their cLOUDDEAD project made it's rise to the underground's podium as one of the most exciting musical collectives around. With their limited hardware 'n endless imagination they developed excellent production solutions to their unique compositions, earning the respect of everyone that r not on the music biz for the dollar. But back to Why?. He developed a parallel solo career with a couple of EPs, and by the end of the last year he came up with his second album of spaced-out folk songs drenched in superb beach boy harmonies. See for yourself on the single I present today. One last thing though, his voice is an adquired taste to the untrained ear, but well worth.

Nobody & Mystic Chords - Feet Upon The Sand

I love those artists that walk the fine line between and among various genres, but consistently use electronic sounds as the glue. Nobody & Mystic Chords is the most subtle example of the genre. It's a new project that sprouted when Dj Nobody, Chris Gunst of Beachwood Sparks 'n Jen Cohen of The Aislers Set teamed up, and now they have their album "Tree Colored See" to be released on Mush Records on April 25th. In the words of others "they combine sunshine jangly folk-rock instrumentation and laid-back vocals with the latest sampling technics and digital tweekings". All that, means to me that Spring has begun. Bandwagon with me on this one. ;)

He shure knows how to pick both his partners 'n his concepts. Well he's back again with the "Gnarls Barkley" project (along with Cee-lo) and this time I'm guessin' the theme is luuurve. The fucked up kind. The first single "Crazy" has long time leaked 'n has been on my playlist ever since. Now I submit it to your apreciation. Hope it hooks on your ears from now on.

Every since Dangermouse's Grey Album, concept mashup albums have been the craze. It's not like we need another, but I stumbled into one that deserves my attention. L.A. producer Dert has created somewhat of a hip hop masterpiece based on Jose Gonzalez's Veneer, one of my favorite records of last year.

Dert's Sometimes I Rhyme Slow, features Kanye, Mos Def, Common, Erykah Badu, MF Doom, and more, comes out March 7. Listen to snippets from the album and download a couple 'o tracks at his myspace page.

No hype needed this time. Their time is now and they earn it. Even though spankrock is a project composed by hip young men, their music surpasses in quality the work of almost every older established star out there. (how's this for presumption?)
No, really. The production behind their tracks is very now. Crispy now! Fat beats together with casiotone synths 'n cheeky lyrics towards the ladies. Betcha they'll appear on most end of the year best of list. And if this shit hits the fan and earns the general public's attention, well, we're in for a different energic leap in hip hop's mainstream. We can only hope...

The Internet is the only mainstream medium where complete, free artistic expression exists. In the past it was necessary to partner with a large corporation if you wanted to have a voice sizable enough to be relevant. No longer. The mechanics of the Internet expose television as the antiquated, stagnate medium it is. Nothing exciting happens on television, so they promote "exciting" people. Television has truly become the idiot box. In those olden days, turning off the television was akin to shutting the blinds to the outside world. No wonder those who even suggested the idea were marginalized. Words are nice, visuals are better. But, the TV filter renders everything that passes through into bullshit. That's why viral videos (and bunny rabbit killing sites) have established a niche so easily on the net. There's obviously an audience for entertainment without rules.

I'm beggining 2 find it easier to confess my devotion about the artists I write about here. So I figgured what the hell let's go straight 2 one of my biggest obcessions. The other day I got hold of one fresh new track by RADIOHEAD, and now I'm linking u to it too. What can I say, for the folks that know nothing 'bout 'em? (rare thing these days)!? Well for starters every post 1997 band singer secretly worships Thom Yorke. Every post "Ok Computer" rock band uses the production techniques that they along Mr. Nigel Godrich pionneered. They are pushing their compositions further at each album, to include influences from the likes of Scott Walker, Alice Coltrane, Can, Boards Of Canada, Talking Heads, Arvo Pärt, Autechre, Neil Young, Charles Mingus, Aphex Twin or Johnny Cash. Tell me those are not good.

One of my non secret guilty pleasures, is that I'm a sucker for the classic "Smiley Smile" record by the Beach Boys. I absolutely love that shit. And from that record I went and discovered other great ones. Including "Pet Sounds", one of the best pop records ever made. Everyone seems to praise this. I really dig that one too, and yes some of their best songs are on that album, but I'm more of a leftfield guy. Pet sounds was all 'bout perfection where as Smiley STILL IS far out there. And far out there too, was Dangermouse's "Grey Album" that started a whole new trend of mashing entire classic albums with hip-hop acapellas.
If u don't know what the hell I'm writing about... DO YOUR HOMEWORK. :)))

Today I'm gonna link you to a page with one whole record that follows Dangermouse's footsteps. Lushlife mashes Mr. Kanye West with the perfect pop of "Pet Sounds".
And just 'cause I'm a big sucker for Sufjan Stevens' music, I'm also adding a Kanye mash with one track from Sufjan's latest "Illinois".

It's time to confess some guilty pleasures of mine, for the sake of summer. Mine that is. Hoppefully u 2 will dig some of the hit singles I'm gonna post here 'n that way I'll be free to nodd my head every time I hear them. Shamelessly. :)

I absolutely love the latest single by that broad who used 2 have a band called "No Doubt". Gwen Stefani's the name. The song revolves around a beat that's half grime, half "favela funk", and is sung in a shouty manner, but shouty in a way that it appears to be a mellower grime song (the guitar also helps to smooth things down). But 2 me, what makes it a "tour de force", is the way the dry beat combines with the horn section of an alledged high-school marching band. Sounds corny? Maybe. Irresistible? Sure. B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Absolutely. :)
To this day I'm stunned that it became a hit in the US, but then again lately we've had the privilege to be graced with some excelent pop singles that have some inovative 'n adventurous production, and a lot of thanx go to the fellas that produced this one. The Neptunes. If u don't know these guys, think of 'em as the brains behind the best singles of Britney Spears (yes shes has a couple of kick-ass tunes :) but I'll talk 'bout that on future posts ;)), 'n Snoop Dog. They're 2/3s of the band N.E.R.D. as well. Ladies 'n gentlemen, this is my bow to them. :)
The chit-chat is goin' well, but I really don't want 2 divert u from my main point, so... download the freakin' thing n' rock on. :)

Sometimes you don't find a favourite song. Sometimes it finds you. That's precisely the case of the track by the Folk Implosion (pic 1) I'm gonna post here. That song brings me back 2 the best summer of my life. 1997. I had just graduated form high-school, and went along in an adventurous trip to my very first summer festival along with one of my buds, knowing that when I got back, I had my brand new guitar waiting to ROCK!!! Sorry 2 disapoint, no girl on the story. :) The curves on the guitar were all that mattered 4 that summer. :) And all summer I jammed along to this tune juz 'cause of its great beat. 'N that's the story of how it came 2 be one of my favorite songs.
Movin' on... that song, is very then. Au contraire, the #2 song I'm posting here is definitly now, and just the type of song I wanna hear when I go out 4 a night at the tiles. It's also a remix. Or better yet, a rework of a NIN song made with the craftsmanship of the fellows of the excellent DFA collective, whose leader is the all mighty James Murphy of the LCD Soundsystem(see pic 2). It really gets me up in da mood 4 a kick ass night. Hope it has the same effect on u. :)
To finish off the post, I just wanted to brief u on something. Jamie Lidell (pic 3) has a new album out, and if u can only buy 2 albums this summer, u should buy the Lidell boy's work. Twice.:)

I spend a lot of time searching for music, and I don't always know what I'm looking for. I think that I do a pretty good job of keeping the quality control pretty tight on this site, but this time I'm gonna give u pure gold.
This is just the type of thing that can convert someone to the wonders of hip hop. It was done by DJ Troubl and hopefully one of u will dig this mixtape of Quasimoto tracks as much as I do, and do the same preaching I'm doin' right now, to your friends. :)
It's endorsed by the excellent StonesThrow label, and as said above, features tracks by one of the best underground artists around, Quasimoto, blended with some smoooove classics. U'll get 2 hear backingtracks courtesy of such greats as David Axlerod n Eugene McDaniels.
Again, this Is Hot Shit 'n already a classic!!!!!

I'll leave u the warning, most people might find Quasi's voice intonation a bit awkward at first, but belive me, if u're gonna get into hip hop, this is the sort of stuff u wanna hear. Not those, bubblegum, crappy tunes u hear on mainstream radios all the time. Be open minded 'n get it while the vaults r open. :)

2 Essential Albums For The Price Of None

Again this has to be really quick... :(
This time I'm gonna give u the chance to download one of the defining albums in my musical... hmmm... formation (guess that's the word). The band is called Pavement, and their last album as a band is to this day one that I have in that soft spot in my heart. The way Stephen Malkmus sings (completely care free, simply enjoying the moment), the sloppy guitar playing, Nigel Godrich's production (the same producer of "OK Computer", 'nough said right?! :) ), make this a stellar album. I still remember that I managed to buy it previous to its edition. I got connections u know... or at least I used to. :) Well to sum it up this is the record that made me re-think the way I play guitar. It will always be in my top 20 of all time.

Well the other record I'm gonna link here is allready one of the best albums of the year. The Doves' - Some Cities.
Most people just follow the hype, and the hype is clearly what Coldplay are all about. Sure they improoved, made catchy tunes and the bloke can sing without being off-key, but something's still missing 4 me. Or to explain it like I should... why the hell do I need Coldplay if The Doves outbeat 'em at their own game!?!? To me it has always been The Doves 5, Coldplay - 0. Download the record n see if u agree with me.

Haven't been so 'syched 'bout a new artist in a long long while! Sufjan and his music have been my company lately. Great music, great musicians, nicely produced, and the album can be listened as a whole. And boy, belive me, that's saying a lot these days!
You know... my listening habbits have changed quite a bit due to the digital technologies and the mp3 format, but this guy made me re-think all my whacky playlists, and my poppy hit-singles collection, with a record, soon to be a classic, made with the same authenticity as the ones that made me the music lover that I once was. To sum it up againg, the boy's got it all. Hope he makes it BIG!
